Garden seat made by 23206474 Sergeant Fred Burley (Ex Pioneer Sgt. 1st Battalion. Coldstream Guards) assisted by Mr Frank Carter. This ornate garden seat was made for Major General Sir John Nelson KCVO CB DSO OBE MC late Grenadier Guards on his retirement as president of the Guards Parachute Association in October 1991. The seat was commissioned by Major G Mitchell MBE BEM, Scots Guards, the Chairman of the Association and was made by Sergeant Fred Burley, Coldstream Guards. The oak came from the forest of Windsor Great Park, one of the trees planted by Queen Victoria, which was blown down in the storms of 1987. The seat was presented to Sir John on the sixteenth anniversary reunion held at Pirbright and the seat was then delivered to the General's home in Appin Tagyll in Scotland. According to his letters and photographs he enjoyed many happy hours resting in his garden, no doubt casting his memory back over the years.
Unfortunately the General passed away in 1993 and after his death the family presented the garden seat to the Guards Chapel where it now stands in his memory.
